58th Annual Grammy Awards

February 17, 2016

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards aired on a new night this year, Monday instead of Sunday. That was not the only change they made to their regularly, scheduled program. It is the tradition of the Grammys to pay tribute to music legends, who have passed away since the previous awards. When the music community learned tributes would not be paid to Maurice White of the iconic group, Earth, Wind and Fire as well as Natalie Cole (tributes were pre-scheduled for David Bowie, Glen Frey and Lemmy), social media went ablaze with #GrammysSoWhite. Stevie Wonder and Pentatonix indeed performed in honor of Maurice White and settled the score. It is also great to give people their flowers while they can smell them and everyone can agree that the incomparable singer, songwriter and legend Lionel Richie both smelled and was pleased with them tonight with a musical collage by John Legend, Demi Lovato, Luke Bryan, Meghan Trainor and Tyrese.

Performances that left the audience in awe were Kendrick Lamar’s (who was nominated for 11 Grammys) electrifying performance that paid homage to the motherland and issues plaguing the minority community on U.S. soil to a live performance by the cast of the Broadway play Hamilton simulcasted from NYC (a Grammy first). A soul-stirring duet from mainstream newcomers Tori Kelly & James Bay and a squeaky-clean rendition of ‘Girl Crush’ by Little Big Town also received a standing ovation. A spin on a commercial break, that featured a live music video of Gwen Stefani’s new song, ‘Make Me Like You,” aired for Target.

Lady Gaga combined the technology of Intel to bring to life the musical eye-candy in her tribute to David Bowie as she brought out all the bells and whistles from wardrobe to song selections to visual effects.  An equally fitting tribute to BB King by Bonnie Raitt, Gary Clark and Chris Stapleton was set in a sultry, bluesy style that could not have gone off any other way.

Overall the show went off without a hitch, bringing back LL Cool J to host for his fifth year in a row. Music is one of the few mediums that brings the world together and the Grammys brings the best of the best to the coveted stage to be seen by all. From the Indies to the Majors, various genres and styles of artists are introduced to new fans and a community of established songwriters, producers and executives. .
